Types of training

Project Planning and Development (PPD) training

This three-day workshop introduces the fundamentals of designing a strong community-based project. Participants are engaged in active participation to gain a foundation for creating community-based projects and grant writing skills; this information and these skills can be adapted to any community, any project, and any funder. Come with an understanding of your community’s long-range goals; if you aren’t quite there yet, the training can help you identify those goals along the way. Participants will learn how to:

  • Work with community and key partners to identify and document specific community problems that stand in the way of meeting community goals;
  • Create a project work plan to address those problems and attain community goals;
  • Develop measurable outcomes and impacts to the community; and
  • Determine the level of resources and funding needed to implement the project.

These trainings are typically held in the fall.

Pre-Application training

This training guides participants through the process of developing a competitive ANA grant application. Participants use their own project to learn hands-on how to assemble an application specific to ANA’s funding announcements and requirements, review the most recent Notices of Funding Opportunity (NOFOs), learn what reviewers look for in applications, and gain strategies for addressing evaluation criteria. Come to this training with a project idea already in mind. Participants will learn how to:

  • Understand the ANA Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) Evaluation Criteria;
  • Format, package, structure and submit a funding application; and
  • Register and apply on Grants.gov.

These trainings occur after the publication of the ANA Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) announcements.

Post-Award training

This training is held exclusively for new ANA grant recipients and focuses on grant implementation and compliance: effective project management, reporting and compliance. If you are a new grantee, you are required to attend this training and ANA will be in touch with more details; registration must be pre-approved by an ANA Program Specialist. Participants will learn how to:

  • Read a Notice of Award (NOA);
  • Complete and submit the required quarterly reports (Objective Progress Report and SF-425);
  • Utilize GrantSolutions.gov; and
  • Submit a timely non-competing grant continuation application and requests for non-routine grant amendments.

If you are an applicant, you can learn more about ANA’s expectations by looking at the Post-Award Manual or the Grants Management Toolkit.

Webinars and capacity-building workshops

Webinars provide insights, ideas, and feedback sessions geared toward making your program or project a success, on a variety of topics to assist your community’s development goals. Capacity-building workshops explore community-based strategies for leading efforts through change, focused on maintaining effectiveness and innovating to achieve impact.

Who can attend

Participation in the training sessions is limited to individuals who are employed by or are governing officials of Tribal governments and Native nonprofit organizations serving American Indians, Native Hawaiians, Alaskan Natives, and Native American Pacific Islanders. Independent grant writers or consultants working on behalf of a Tribe or organization must provide official documentation from the organization (a signed letter on organization stationery) stating that the consultant is able to work on their behalf. Although trainings are free, attendees of in-person trainings are responsible for their own travel and per diem costs; please do not make travel arrangements until the training event has been officially confirmed.
